Hey /lit/

Couldn't find anywhere more appropriate for this post.

Im 19, and my entire life I have only properly considered and read science, I have completely neglected literature, arts, history, politics, etc etc. I would like to become a more cultured person instead of one who is just completely focused on science, and I am here for some recommendations of books surrounding art, history, politics and general literature.

One you've cut your teeth on some light fiction, I recommend jumping right into Beowulf, Seamus Heaney translation. Shit is cash. You may also consider reading some of the Icelandic Sagas, specifically Egil's Saga.

Hmm, a book that sprung to mind when you mentioned politics and history as well as literature is the Cairo trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz, fantastic set of books that are rich in history and politics concerning WW1 and the British occupation of Egypt, the themes of the novels deal with a lot of problems faced in today's modern western society too I found, would really recommend them.
