My brother will be teaching his first semester at a local community college in the fall. He'll be teaching English as a second language to students who should be able to operate at a college level. The course requires a "reader"--any book whose purpose is basically to build the students' vocabularies.

As I said, it's his first time teaching, so he isn't quite sure which book he should assign. He is considering Beowulf and Common Sense together because the former is short enough that it can be read for in-class discussions between students, and he thinks that the latter is more substantial than just choosing a classic which might be taught in high school. I thought I might get some suggestions from any of you to pass along.

Pic unrelated.

Why not a good translation of Borges?

Why do you suggest that? If you were an instructor, would you choose to teach Borges to your students?

He should assign Hegel. Easy reads for beginners. Concepts there can mean anything.

Hamlet or Macbeth should be easy for people who are not good with English.

ITT: lit trolls the OP mercilessly.

OP, my wife is a bilingual teacher. Based on the kind of things she talks about when she talks about her job, I'd say Beowulf and Common Sense are bad choices because they feature older styles and figures of speech that do not fit nicely into the modern English your brother is no doubt expected to teach them. If he had time, he could use those texts to give his students some background on the history and evolution of our language (no doubt with a choice bit of Shakespeare thrown in), but they do not serve the purpose of a "reader."

I would suggest something more like

- All the Pretty Horses
- Heart of Darkness
- Lord of the Flies
- Consider the Lobster
- The Life of Pi
