You missed the point of the book. He did not truly love Maria, he just wanted to pump and dump.

But seeing how attached she became to Jordan, he didn't want to just break it off with her. So he does this manly Hemmingway-esque bs about how he needs to stay behind and kill the man that killed Sordo, which will surely kill himself as well.
