You know how in Christianity there is God? Well in the modern world there is this mystical, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient entity called "civilization", and it is an evolving God - meaning that it is becoming more godlike through time. This is the belief in "progress", that as time goes on civilization is becoming more civilized, culture is becoming more cultured, truth is becoming more true, humanity is becoming more humane, science is becoming more scientific, etc. - that's literally what people are saying when they say they "believe in progress". "Faith in humanity" is the same thing, a belief in this pantheistic God "humanity".
