I never read books but I bought this one because my friend sold it to me.

No spoilers: is it good?

>> No.5049010

It's "good"

>> No.5049013

if you are not a big book reader, that's probably the best book to read. gimmicky and dark, but funny and relatively smart. also, fuck you nigger

>> No.5049045

it's actually on short list of books that I would never recommend to anyone unless I absolutely hated them

>> No.5049062

>>5049013

I actually think the opposite of this. It's not good for someone who doesn't usually read, because of its unconventional format and somewhat convoluted subject matter.

>ex-gf is super smart Ivy League student going into investment banking
>raves about house of leaves ALL DAY LONG
>breaks my heart when she leaves me
>in my grief i decide to give marky z. a go

>mfw it's pleb-tier, easymode valve ARG stuff
>mfw i realize she just wanted to hurt me one more time
>hurr durr mental illness is so frightening and beyond any mortal comprehension

If this is the new sophistication, please leave me out of it.

It was my first 'hard' book and it was fun when I was 15. But I can't say if I would enjoy it as much today.
I would recommend to you to read the first 2 or 3 chapters (that's about 30 pages I think) and if you like those, well continue.

>> No.5049198

It's an enjoyable read but ultimately nothing life-changing.

The horror parts are good but pedestrian "that thing is weird" style horror, the narrator's character writing is weak, and the formatting stuff does create an ambiance, but has little relation to the content of either story, with the exception of the footnotes, and ultimately, is just repetitive.

It's pleb. If you like the cerebral element, read Borges. If you like the unsettling weirdness, read Kafka.

>> No.5049342

It's a great read. Very labyrinthian.

It's decadent post-modern filth.

mostly this, it's a cool book that I enjoyed but it wasn't high lit or anything. the navidson record parts were cool, the narrator parts were meh

How is Borges pleb?

>> No.5049664

Besides the sex parts I found reading it such a fucking chore.
I only read it because a cutie leant it to me and then, after I read it, she never spoke to me again.
I still have the book on my shelf which makes me either mad or sad each time I see it which is quite often.

Oh, and when I was reading it I found what must've been one of her hairs in the pages. I may've masturbated.

>> No.5049670

I read 100 pages when I was really into /x/ stuff years ago and /x/ was less of a shit dump and I got bored and stopped reading it.

When it's good, it's good. When it's bad, it's bad. Like another anon said, the Navidson parts were fucking key, but the Jonny Truant narratives were kind of redundant. I also didn't understand why they were really included (don't care to backtrack and find out. they just seemed irrelevant to the overall plot).

It's an okay read, but nothing special. I didn't bother reading past Exploration 5. i.e. the 'big finish'
