Pevear and Volokhonsky are not as good as they're made out to be. Most people who recommend them don't know anything else. This goes double for those who say 'always P&V' regardless of the author. P&V homogenize everything, and they constantly miss subtleties of wording, idiom, etc.

Putrid & Venal

Imagine spending the years and years of becoming an expert in a language and truly understanding an author to write a decent translation and having people who know nothing about either dismiss it as having no value compared to the original text...

I mean what is the meaning of their efforts at this point?

>>5048847
Are you responding to the criticism of P&V? He doesn't know the language, and neither 'truly understand' Dostoevsky or any other Russian author. She simply churns out wooden English renditions and he makes them grammatical. They've achieved a critical mass of output so nobody but the experts hold them accountable.
