Wow, I live in Austin, and I can 100% vouch for this guy.

Once, while I was attending ACC Rio Grange, this woman in the class made a remark along the lines of "It was the gayest thing ever...", and a gay guy sitting next to me called her out by saying, "Are you seriously that ignorant?" and proceeded to make a bit of an ass of her.

He eventually stormed out of the class. The sad part was everyone was like, "What's he upset about?"

New Yorker here. People still say things are gay. They don't mean it in a "gay is bad" way, it's a word that's taken on another definition, the same way "gay" originally didn't mean "homosexual".

Besides that, NYC is a mix of all kinds of people, gays and bigots, don't think you won't encounter intolerance if you come here.

For what it's worth if this is how you feel about yourself, that you're totally different and better from everyone else, others pick up on that. They might not know a better word than "weird", but seeing as how you're setting yourself up as the other, sounds like you deserve some of the blame.

Yea, shit like this. When people see you do things that they haven't seen or aren't used to, it becomes "weird" for them because it is different from what they do/how they do things.

I got called weird for knowing lots about fashion, reading books, listening to a different type of music, etc.

This would be accurate if I made any differentiation between myself and others that I experienced clearly verbalized or shown to them, which I do not. People do not "pick up" that I'm different or feel different from them, but merely place a catchall term on me and others to encompass the differentiation the may notices. My statement said nothing about a predetermination of my difference in my own mind, but more of a post-determination, an understanding that the most of the individuals to place the term "weird" on me were as I described.

>>5034021
And they, what, sensed that I saw them that way? That's what drove them to make the claim of my weirdness? Who are you to claim any perception of another group of people is weird by any means? But on the former point, what excuse does that provide them to directly tell me I'm "weird?" I would certainly be less upset if they called me any number of more specific things, including a cookie-cutter husk. To call a person weird is akin to calling a dog hairy. Aren't all dogs hairy to an extent? What of the color, texture, or length? Not even a hint toward any depth of description?

For those things? Of course not. People like what they like. And from a semantic standpoint I'm also sick of people saying everything is "weird."

But my point is if he's pointing out he's somehow different from the "cookie cutter husks" that he encounters, I bet it comes out in his day to day interactions with them. He's viewing them as less than, why on earth wouldn't they view him the same way? Even if everyone else called him weird before he called them cookie cutter, that doesn't change that he's making it worse by being standoffish and making them feel they're right about him.

First paragraph guy here.

Sorry, but people do pick up on those things. Just because you haven't made it explicitly clear doesn't mean they don't notice. People are simply more perceptive than that, even if they are unable to articulate their perceptions in any way other than "he's weird." If you see yourself as different, others will see it too, like it or not. Other people are more perceptive than you are giving them credit for.

no, maybe you seeing them as cc husks made you a bit less social. maybe carrying a book everywhere was a safety blanket of a pretentious order. I don't believe that excuses them I don't believe that. I don't think the hair of the dog is akin to your debatable 'weirdness' you're more like a dog that refuses to sniff ass, is my bet. calling someone weird doesn't make them weird and refusing to call them doesn't make them any less batshit. And they called you weird instead of anything else most likely because calling you something else would require some critical thinking which most people didn't want to or couldn't expend

Like it or not, as far as this thread is concerned you gave off an impression I don't think you meant to give off, and from the sounds of it, it's an impression you didn't intend to give off. I wouldn't presume to know anything about you, I'm not saying you should be called weird, and I'm sure as shit not saying it's fair; but I am saying if you want to change the opinion others have of you, you need to change the opinion you have of others. Unless you're a complete sociopath, you're simply not a good enough actor to fool everyone into thinking they like you, and from the sounds of it, no one's fooled. If you don't want to deal with others' judgmental bullshit you need to make some concessions.

That said, best of luck. I'm several years removed, but I understand your situation far more than you can realize.

If my previous landlord had wanted to, he could have easily charged me $500 more and had it be a fair market rent, and I bet that's what he did when I moved out.

Once I save up the down payment my goal is to buy a place further along the E/R in Jackson Heights or Forest Hills. I think those places are going to explode in the next 10 years, especially once they build the tech campus on Roosevelt Island.

>people getting autistic over sayings like that

You should read the catcher in the rye. He's got a real good way of going on like that with phrases, like he's gotta a whole peanut gallery in his head. Not sure if that makes sense, but that's how it is. Anyways he'll go on like that and talk your ear off for hours, and he was a real jerk about it but he never gave you a chance to tell him to buzz off. Boy I tell you I got a lot of listening done out of him, reminds me of this old guy that lived next door. He always had a story to tell about something or another, he'd always start things off by saying something like, "That reminds me of when I was in the war". You'd think he'd been in every war there was with how much he said. He'd give you this look like he was staring straight into your soul, always sent a chill down my spine. It was real cold the last time he sat me down, forgot my jacket over at dans house. I always forgot stuff at dans house, didn't know whether dan liked to steal or if I was real forgetful. It was a nice jacket too, lots of pockets and it felt really bushy and cozy but it wasn't all puffy like those big rapper jackets. Man I missed that jacket. So I was sitting there next to this old guy while he was talking about being in Germany or something, and honestly I wasn't interested in what he was saying but he was old and he was in the war so it was one of those things you did.

Anyways you should really read the catcher in the rye, It's a good book.
