I often read here something to the effect of there being no red thread / common narrative anymore in our the west / our society / similar. I feel like that's true, it's something I often thought myself one way or another. But what do you do at this point? Do you create your own narrative? Won't that be inevitably hollow, since it's based on nothing? You can't really base it on most of history after all, since history was part of a narrative that doesn't really seem to be 'in effect' anymore.

Sorry for the shitty english.

There has only been one narrative throughout the history of humanity, and that has been that of the hero triumphing over another. They will use either strength to defeat a physical threat to their home, or cunning to outwit someone stronger than they are. They will then be rewarded for their bravery with material wealth or a husband/bride of their choosing.

Because contemporary society has begun to question the sanctity of these common goals, the stories that survived for millions of years in various forms ring hollow to them. Winning by force is masculine and undesirable, winning by cunning underhanded and dishonorable. Fighting for gold is not enlightened enough for a society that wants to pretend it's above money, and fighting for marriage is unthinkable as it--gasp!--objectifies the object of desire.

> Won't that be inevitably hollow, since it's based on nothing?
The growing trend in reaction to literary critique seems to be to Teletubbie-ize narratives. Either you saturate the story with so much harmless fluff that it's too friendly to be threatening (see: the adult obsession with saccharine cartoons) or you make your hero harmless and devoid of ambition, fighting only to perserve the status quo of the audience (Marvel and DC comic stories and movies, The Hunger Games).

>You can't really base it on most of history after all, since history was part of a narrative that doesn't really seem to be 'in effect' anymore.

All historical narratives, since the time of Snorri Sturlson, have been twisted so that they fit the contemporary values that satisfy the storyteller.

But thats not true. The narrative has been winning over some challenge or threat, not 1upping someone in a zero sum game.

Easy there Nash. Both your views translate to the same: it's a game.
How you define it depends on what is convenient, which by turn is highly relative
