Maximalism.

Minimalism, while sexy for like 5 seconds to look at, is ultimately shallow and boring.

For example, houses...yes a minimalist design looks cool and uncluttered. But after 2 days of sitting in there with you fucking egg >4996300 you would actually want to do something...

Where is the library full of books?
Where is the gaming pc setup?
Where is the gun rack?
Where are the sculptures and paintings to look at and to spend free time finding all the little cool details?
Where is the life?

A minimalist design is anti-life.

>All these minimalist pussies.

Fucking dilettantes. You only pretend to live simply. What's the point in owning substantial property at all if its sole function is to put a roof over your head or serve as an address on some form?

>>4996300 Is this not a great waste of space? Assuming, of course, this is the bedroom and not the entire structure. And if this is minimalist, what is the purpose of the stone egg? It serves no function. That garden is a great waste, too: instead of being designed for cultivating produce, it's better have a collection of hot stones to stand on? Ridiculous. These people barely know what minimalism is. Everything must have its function; only the necessary elements need be present.

You want real minimalism? Go out one day and don't stop.

Did I say I did it? Did I at all place myself above anyone? In fact, did I ever actually say I wanted to live the minimalist lifestyle at all? It's the mode of life I most respect. A poor man can respect and strive toward a wealthy life, without any guarantee he'll live it. I'm a punchable-faced, smug suburban sap: I respect the simple life in much the same way. Emile Hirsch went out on a glorified camping trip; Thoreau, though he lived by an exemplary economy, was flawed in that he relied on far too many people in his life; Christopher McCandless had the right idea, but was idiot enough not to plan a damn thing. It's a very difficult thing to pull off with great effect. My point was that minimalism has come to contradict itself in so many ways that it's practically useless. Now calm down.

I think DFW's essay called "something something conspicuously young" is pretty neat on this subject, and highlights why Tao Lin's work is, despite the occasional flourish or insight, pretty weak overall.

I appreciate maximalism, though to the extent that you can trust the writer has a point and isn't simply jerking off

Oh, I see: you can't read. I'm a poser, who uses up damn near every inch of floor space in this place, and yet the minimalists who barely use any of it aren't? If you're going to do something, and if you want to make it worthwhile, why waste your time buying a sizable house just to put nothing in it? It's a waste of space, is what it is. You're asking if I'm for real? I place anyone who goes out to live simply far above myself, friend, whether they screwed parts of it up or not. If you're going to do something, don't fuck around with it: do it right. No, you're right, I don't live the minimalist lifestyle, can't say I want to: but I can respect those who do. You can respect the soldiers without joining the army. We're angry at the same people, but you're too far up your own ass to see.

Minimalism is first and foremost an aesthetic and an artistic sensibility, the whole simple living blogger scene that kidnapped the phrase came later.

>> No.4999010

Minimalism (when done well) is allright because it doesn't really bother anyone. It's safe, pleasant to look at.
But that's it.
The lack of detail and entropy gets boring after a while. You could say that you can find these even in the most minimalist of designs if you stare at them long enough, but in a more chaotic design, these details are much easier to spot and probably even make long term living more comfortable. (we are talking about interior design right?)
That's all just my opinion, anyway.

>> No.4999051

>>4998318
This guy got it right.
What's the point in having a 20m2 room with a 4m2 bed, a 2m2 table and two chairs? That's the opposite of minimalism.
In minimalism you make as much as possible function with as little as possible.

That doesn't mean increasing the amount of crap, but it means having a smaller room, reducing the amount of bed if you sleep alone (yes you, /lit/).
This does not mean making the door smaller, because if you can't quickly fit through the door then it doesn't work well.

>> No.4999076

Minimalism.

There's no end to the amount of shit you can acquire. Minimalism applies to everything, including knowledge. So you need to stop reading to be a minimalist as acquiring more and more knowledge is against the minimalist philopsophy. I've stopped reading but I still browse /lit/ for fun anyway. You'll be happier OP.

Robison, Carver, and Beattie are some of the greatest short story writers in the "contemporary" scene. their minimalism should be greatly, greatly respected by any serious student of literature. maximalism, what even is that? Pynchon?

Men entering the house threw him a coin or two to shut him up. Eventually Diogenes had collected enough money and he too went into the brothel.

> For example, it was said Demosthenes was willing to pay 1,000 Greek drachmas for a night with her, but she raised her price to 10,000 drachmas after viewing him,[1] while she gave herself to Diogenes for nothing.[2]

It allows you to focus on what's most important to you. Maximalism as an end product is permissible, but an artist or scholar who lives it will never reach their true potential. Our capacity is finite. We should use it wisely.
