How would /lit/ define postmodernism?

>> No.4968832

I'd look it up in a dictionary.

In theory it abandons objective truths, which has a couple of problems, mainly:
1. It rarely does in practice, and
2. This definition is unusually restrictive for an art movement

In practice I'd say that it is just a hyper awareness of the audience. Point 2 up there ^^ is even a reaction to knowing that there is an audience, and knowing that a movement can and therefore will be defined and have structure and limitation.

Ask again in twenty years, there was no set definition for modernism in the 50s.

the same way modernists defined modernism
"because I'm too stupid to understand change and development this shit is horrible"
the next decade cometh
"HOLY SHIT MODERNISM IS THE FUCKING TITS"

the same will come when postmodernism will be praised

I can define it in several ways.
The final orgy of Capitalist Western Decadence as barbarians from within and without prepare to strike. It is freedom for freedom sake throwing itself to the flames, refusing to compromise. It is idealistic in this sense, which seems contradictory considering it superficially eschews absolutes and ideals. It is the sign of a dizzy civilization nearing it's pinnacle before a freefall.

We become frustrated and perplexed with postmodernism, but when we consider the alternatives, we remember the nature of innocence, once it is lost, it can never be regained. Anything other than postmodernism is an act on the part of those who have been claimed by it.

tl;dr At this point in time, Postmodernism is the inability to accept willful ignorance.

While we're on the topic, can someone refer me to any books on the subjects of either (or encompassing) modernism, postmodernism, post-postmodernism, and metamodernism?

Wikipedia can only explain so much the way it's presented.

A socially leftist political doctrine presented as artistic thought.

For the most part its reasoning is nonsensical and intentionally obscure, and Postmodernism's main tool is the fact that it claims to not take itself or anything else seriously whenever criticized. In this way its adherents cannot under its philosophy be swayed from a blind reverence.

Weird shit, apparently people think following Postmodernism makes them smart.

The only sad thing is that in reality the mech would still be fucked. I don't give a goddamn what sort of armor it has, nothing is going to withstand the kinetic force of a 120mm depleted uranium round traveling over 1700m/s from 20m away.

Modernity was the realization that art is everywhere.
Post-Modernism is the realization that not only is art fucking everywhere but it also plays a huge part in the construction of our understanding of the modern world.

It's the idea that there will always be only one "The Beatles".
The Great Gatsby is THE "Great American Novel".
Meta-shit has been integrated into our daily lives, you practicalyl have to escape it now.

Things like this.

Hey man, if you're seriously looking to understand metamodernism then there really isn't that much reading you have to do.

Look up Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker and their essay called "notes on metamodernism" or something

It's pretty basic but it covers the general grounds of the subject
