Ok ok ok. So I was at my friends house today and I broke out a book from my backpack. This book was Watchmen. His dad noticed it and then started bitching at me about how Alan Moore is "overrated". After a while of being complained at about a book, I just blurted out "Have you even read it?!" His reply was "No, But i really don-" I interrupted "Then how about you FUCKING read the book and tell me about it, I think it's a god damn great book! I don't care if it's "overratted". "

So my question to you litfags is;
Just because a book is highly thought of, or as society calls it "overrated" does that make the book TERRIBLE?! I loved Watchmen, great story, great characters. Why do people give a fuck if it's overrated if the story is amazing

It's a graphic novel at best....

I'm trying to discuss something, not debating over either to call it a comic, graphic novel, or book. I call it a book, okay? Get the fuck out.

You're obviously not a regular user of /lit/, and you are telling us to get out?

Naw. It's like, their opinion, man. Doesn't make Watchmen any less better or worse.

wat.

I thought watchmen was fantastic. I liked how deliberate he was with the medium, trying to make something that could only be said in a comic. Genius, really. The movie was, eugh.

>> No.496718

Watchmen is literature, but its not a book. But that's not the issue here. If you like something, then you think it's good it doesn't matter if other people don't, I like The Fountainhead.

"Overrated" is what people call stuff when they don't have a strong opinion about something, but want to pretend like they do because they enjoy being thought of as knowledgeable. If your friend's dad had read the book, he'd have something more interesting to say.

Sometimes, although the general consensus is generally correct. For example, I, being told I could not make an opinion about it until I read it, picked up a copy of Twilight. After crying myself to sleep for two nights, I finished the book and am now able to confess how ungodly awful it is. Conversely, I love 4chan, whereas the general consensus would rule against it.
