Have you read Phaedo? Socrates makes life and the body to be some sort of sickness that death frees us from. I don't know how anyone can read Phaedo and not see Socrates as a deep ascetic and despiser of life and the body.

I'm much more inclined to agree with his detractor in Phaedo (can't remember his name) who likens the soul to a harmony created by a lyre (the body).

But Socrates doesn't argue that knowledge stems from the formation of memory due to accrued sense perceptions. He argues that the soul (distinct from the body) recollects because it previously existed in the realm of forms--and that all learning is merely a recollection of the soul.
