What exactly is Post-Modernism, and what comes after it?

Post-modernism leaves no room for actual critic of itself so I don't think anything will be built upon it.

People will just fucking grow tired of it, at some point, hopefully.

Postmodernism peaked from the 60s to the early 90s. It was supplanted by New Sincerity, which is now being supplanted by a sort of post-movements movement, called metamodernism by some and postpostmodernism by others. A few select works at the avant-garde of art transcend even metamodernism, achieving an artistic metametamodernism or postmetamodernism. Yeezus and Taipei are the only two examples of this I know of.

Every time someone asks what post-modernism it, there's never a clear answer
I'm starting to think it's not even a movement with actual properties

>> No.4954913

Post-modernism is a will to nothingness. A belief that nothingness is a true freedom.

>> No.4954923

>>4954906
since this thread is already garbage, what should I read to get a better idea of what the "New Sincerity" entails?

>> No.4954926

Post-modernism is simply a response to the modernist movement.

Personally, I've always seen as it as "fiction with a sense of awareness its fiction". This could mean a different number of things. The most clear-cut would be parody or fourth-wall breaking.

However, consider things like the movie Scream. It takes typical genre conventions and questions the reality of them, from your stupid teens who go out at night to the actual deadliness of a creepy stalker. This is post-modern because Scream uses the genre itself as a plot device.

Fiction which references an author's life in some way or form is also a pretty post-modern thing, and I can see how it fits within the "awareness its fiction" definition. Take Metal Gear Solid 2, which is a story written in response to fan's demands of a sequel to MGS and reveals Kojima's personal torture at the hands of the internet, his company, and his fanbase.

Sorry about non-book examples.

So it's about deconstruction?

>> No.4954950

Post-Modernism was the humanities departments trying to emulate the sciences and deal with 'big issues', from the scientific method to grammar acquisition. The results were as comical as you'd expect. Apparently the scientific method is misogynistic, capitalistic and imperialistic.

For some reason every literature board on the internet is crawling with these apes.

"Seriously, what are the principles of their theories, on what evidence are they based, what do they explain that wasn't already obvious, etc? These are fair requests for anyone to make. If they can't be met, then I'd suggest recourse to Hume's advice in similar circumstances: to the flames."

"Noam Chomsky Calls Postmodern Critiques of Science Over-Inflated “Polysyllabic Truisms"

"Criticisms of postmodernism are intellectually diverse, including the belief that postmodernism is meaningless and promotes obscurantism."

The fact that I've never seen a succinct definition provided for post-modernism calls it into question enough. The whole thing seems like vague, hand-wavey bullshit with an added layer of impenetrable verbosity to shield it from criticism

It has been the dominant cultural movement of the past 20 years. Wes Anderson, John Green, Neutral Milk Hotel, Joanna Newsom, some aspects of DFW, some aspects of Tao Lin, certainly many aspects of Steve Roggenbuck, and others. It's earnest, cutesy, twee, kitsch, yearning, and unabashedly sentimental.

>What exactly is Post-Modernism

A rejection of Form, thus a complement to Modernism's rejection of Truth

, and what comes after it?

Why, neomedievalism of course. Form and Truth both come back. The train is already leaving the station, but you can still jump on board.
