Never underestimate a teacher.

He probably said that, to have the student react in rebellion, and publish compulsively, until one day, as wiseness arose from the white hairs in his head, he realized the plot.

As he imagined the face of his teacher, smiling pleased to the display of dareness and stubbornness, the student suddenly felt the need of thanking the teacher.

Unfortunately, the teacher had passed away in the same moment the student realized it...

As he went to his home, he found all the books sent corrected, and a simple smiley at the end.

>to have the student react in rebellion
Harlan did indeed react
he punched him
knocked him out cold

Oh well, that's your story.
In mine the student actually learns something.

Harlan did
He became an acclaimed writer
And haunted the teacher for decades sending him everything he published

I like your story. I mean, obviously the teacher was just a stuffy, egotistical douchebag who wrote off Harlan for not matching his style, and Harlan got his revenge by living well - and constantly needling the teacher with reminders that he was living VERY well thanks to writing.

Because 90% of it is shit. Ellison is a prime example of that. There is as much science in most science fiction as there imagination in most fantasy.

That could be one of the plot lines, or one of the traits of personality of this character.

I find it more coherent to be one of those old ego less bastards, who teach you lessons for you to understand as you grow old.

I am pretty sure we can spot this specific typology of person if we do a retrospective survey of our lives.

Say what you will about Ellison, but The Deathbird, No Mouth, and Harlequin are all classics.

Funny how Sturgeon didn't include himself on that number.

Also, it's more like 99%. Lem, Strugatsky bros, Dick, LeGuin, Vonnegut and I guess that's that.
