>Ugly book covers

I start with pic related (ugly cover): a translation of Keats poetry to Portuguese (I’m Brazilian), a bilingual edition. The book is actually very well documented and the translation is faithful to the original (they didn’t try to preserve rhyme or metrics, but translated the verses precisely as they are).

The cover, however, is hideous: look at those fucking colors (that moss green, ancient-lichen green, the red-colored Keats), and the image of the poet is not adequately inserted in the yellow square.

Yes.

Thinking on posting some Cosac&Naify book covers: they are almost all wonderful. My dream is to be published someday by them.

One example: Oblomov book cover in their edition.

Cosac just rules when it comes to editorial quality. Just look at this, it looks beautiful with AND without the slipcover

(also, have that Oblomov, and will probably get that Virgina Woolf book in the same collection just for the beauty of it)

I asked because L&PM is from Porto Alegre, and they sell their products in every book store, and even in supermarkets. They print lots of volumes.

LP&M just sucks cover-wise, but they're just so cheap and the translations are usually good enough, I just can't avoid getting them.

Also, considering our main pocket books publishers, LP&M is waaaaaaaay better than BestBooks and Martin fucking Claret (just look at this image, tell me you'd buy these fucking things if you could avoid).

Thankfully, Penguin is showing some quality stuff so far, I really hope they expand their catalog soon

>>4935992
That works nationwide, I'm from a small city near Belo Horizonte and can actually buy LP&M stuff from the newsstand in the corner

You know, that is one of the classic covers that I find hideous. It doesn’t have anything to do with the book: it seems almost like the cover of a cheap cyber-punk novel.

Spend some more time with either the cover art or the novel. Probably more than any other cover art it encapsulates the story within.

HAHAHA
I've been trying to post this image for 10 min, and getting an error message.
Was about to say the exact same thing of Martin Claret.

Those page numbers in the middle of the text just piss me off.

Sorry for that. I read the book a long time ago. Guess is time to come back to it.

Here in Paraíba they sell a lot of them as well.
Probably not as much as down there, but I believe it's manly because here "we" don't read.

Countrywise, people don't read.

There are a lot of brbrhues on the internet in general. Most english professors are dryed out pseudo-dykes assigned the most boring modernist trash imaginable so I'm not surprised the degree mills are churning out people ignorant of books like Pynchon's filled with cocks and subtle mysogony and racism.

What are your Top 5 favourite publishers? I was just thinking about it the other day, and I'd go, in no particular order with:

Martins (specially the "Dialéticas" collection)
Cosac & Naify
Companhia das Letras (I guess 80% of the books I've bought last year were theirs)
Aleph
Perspectivas

Also, Conrad has a eternal place within my heart, I've gotten into so much great stuff thanks to them

>>4936100
I know there's a bunch of brbrhues on the internet as a whole, but as far as 4chan goes, I always see way more BRs on /lit/ than /co/ or /mu/ (don't really go to other boards, except the casual /x/ and /pol/ whenever I feel like shitposting)

Really? I know that Brazil as any third world country isn't much a reading country, but I thought up here (northeast) it would be worst.

>>4936122
>>4936135

I never thought about my favorite publishers. I know that I hate Martin Claret.

Concerning which ones I prefer, without any order:
> Saraiva de Bolso (Nova Fronteira)
> Companhia das Letras
> L&PM (why not, eh?)
> Abril Clássicos
> Hedra

I'm not sure if "Abril Clássicos" still exists, I've "inherited" many of their books from my father, and they are top notch.
I love their covers, and the fact that they come with built in ribbon bookmark.

About Editora 34: I really like their cover arts and illustrations, I'm jut not a big fan of their prices. Bought The Double, by Dostoevsky, for R$ 34,00.

>> No.4936215

>>4936200
I may be wrong, but I heard Abril Clássicos usually has terrible translations, and, just like Martin Claret, "stole" a lot of translantions.

But again, I'm not sure. I have Os moedeiros falsos by them and I have no regrets of reading it.
