I just watched the sci-fi channel version of dune last night, it was surprisingly good. I thought the book sucks mainly due to herbert being a terrible writer, but the story is great.

This is probably the most polarizing sci fi novel I've ever heard of online. Will give it a shot after I'm finished with these fucking Hyperion tomes.

>> No.4925418

The first Hyperion book is way better than the first Dune book. Unfortunately all the sequels for both series suck.

>> No.4925437

>>4925418

Are they at least standalone novels? I read reading the first part of a series only to have the plot just stop abruptly.

>> No.4925474

>>4925437
Hyperion ends abruptly, but I think that is an aesthetic decision rather than a cheap cliffhanger. One of the great strengths of the first Hyperion novel is the mystery of it.

Dune is pretty self-contained, although the sequels add layers of ambiguity onto the events of the first book.

Shadow is a really, really awful. In a way that is almost offensive. I've heard that the followup books are a lot better, but I don't know when I'm going to give them another shot.

I'm reading Dune right now, and while I enjoy it, I'm just not as into it as I thought I'd be.

I probably went in with expectations and will like it more when looking back on it for what it truly was, not what I had hoped it would be.
