There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;

Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

>“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”

Albert Caraco (died by hanging in 1971):

*sigh*

I don't quite get the fascination, nor identification with Plath.

Please, please don't take this as an attack, ye olde subjectivity and all that.

Plath's poetry just doesn't sing to me. Her prose stories though, they hold my attention.

Whereas Sexton - oh yes, oh yes.

I suppose it remains to compare the powers of such draws, of what calls the reader into the twilight that buffers our journey into the endless night, and why we would spare such a glimpse when bidden.

Plath was tragic, though she may draw blood and roll in the sensuous mud for a time, there was always something, something fair, struggling to remain.

Anne Sexton's baggage claim was ashed before the flight, and no remorse remains for what holds back a journey down the road to further damnation.

We all have our favorites.

i'm sure some people need psych help of some kind. maybe they think death is the only release or something like that. but again another part of me thinks those ideas are fueled by romanticizing death, suicide or artists who have died young for whatever reason. it should be fundamental and natural to want to live but suicide isn't new either. i think a part of why mishima killed himself was he wanted to be immortalized as he was at a specific point in time, rather than grow old and likely less beautiful in his eyes. that's sad and pathetic imo.

“Call it God, call it divine, call it world spirit, you can’t have an aesthetic experience unless you’re in touch with something real about the world that we don’t really understand.”

maybe artists have issues with dealing with this. some to the point where it's detrimental to their psych health. also with depression i've had it bad where i contemplated suicide but never dared to take beyond contemplation. but i was in high school or early college. i'm sure people deal with levels of it i'm not aware of. i feel bad for them and hope they seek help instead of thinking it's great to off oneself for art. there is no greater art than life imo.
