it's time we settle this debate once and for all.

lord of the rings is a children's bedtime story taken too far. amusing at most.

dune is an insightful exploration of humanity and its self-imposed constructs: politics, myth, human condition itself. heck, Dune Messiah (2nd book) is probably one of the most compelling character studies of all time.

PS: tolkien's writing is way too pedantic and lacks impetus.

a thousand points for Dune!

Since I hate fantasy as a genre. Fucking swords and gay elves and shit.

To quote my favorite show:
"This isn't us, Roy! It takes place in the past!"

>> No.491948

I would have to go with Dune.

However, after Dune Messiah, Herbert should have stopped.

LOTR

Dune is cool but not LOTR brand of cool. Aragorn takes a huge shit all over Paul, man.

>> No.491972

Dune...lol. Yup, I'm the chosen one and me and a bunch of guys I found in the desert brought the greatest empire in the universe to its knees in quite possibly the most contrived battle sequence ever. The whole premise of Dune is laughable and it's hard to tell any of the characters apart from each other.

>> No.491991

As much as I hate to say this words, but the LOTR movies were much better than the books. The "people walking" description is very fitting. Even Silmarillion, with its hundreds of characters and few or no protagonists was more interesting.

Dune is cool.

>> No.491995

I absolutely ADORED Dune when I first read it.
Haven't read any of the sequels or seen any film adaptions of it because I am sure that they will never (and cannot) live up to it.

I'd still vote for LoTR, though.
Those books were my childhood.
Dad gave them to me when I was little (come to think about it, he gave my Dune too). ;~;

I miss reading like I did when I was a kid, /lit/.

There was no conflict in Dune's battles though. It was just the Sardaukar getting their asses handed to them left and right. I never once thought that Paul's faction would lose because it was established early on that Fremen are like super saiyan warriors that can fight toe to toe with Sardaukar with results as good as one dead Fremen for every 30 Sardaukar.

don't forget his prescience tells him he'll win.

i love how herbert manages to weave this intricate plot in which each actor accurately predicts each others' motives and actions yet they're still trapped within that course of action. and then he still manages to put some surprise or twist in there. it's fantastic.
