I really don't like listening to audiobooks at all. Having another person read the book in my place kind of robs from me the ability to think about and absorb the text at my own pace. Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I can think of no situation in which I'd prefer the audiobook over the physical thing.

Jurassic Park's book had a fabulous cassette tape reading.

Quiet, subtle ambiance that didn't interfere with the text, professional voice actors, emotionally read, suspensful with a fabulous narrator, and generally a satisfying listen.

Used to listen to it before bed on quiet nights because it was so damn comfy. I was crestfallen when it finally broke.

Somebody hasn't listened to Jeremy Irons read Lolita. Even if you've read Lolita I recommend it.
It's the only time I'd consider the audiobook to surpass the book itself.

His narration is absolutely and unbelievably exquisite.

What's the harm in trying? After the forward you'll pretty much immediately see what I mean.

In case you were unaware, Jeremy Irons is also the actor who played Humbert Humbert in the 1998 Lolita film adaptation (not the Kubrick one) so he was really able to get into the character.

Poetry, mostly. Burton's The Rime of the ancient Mariner' is still one that I come back to from times to times.
