I'd like to get a best lyricists in music thread going so people can recommend things to each other. We all know /mu/ is a joke, full of 14 year olds.

Here would be my recommendations. Some more obvious than others. I tried to leave out the scremingly obvious of the ilk of Leonard Cohen (who is probably the greatest of all).

The whole album skips back and forth over the "is this dude serious?" line, only for Bound 2 to answer with a resounding "we have no fucking clue." Where the recent metamodernists have decided that continual sinusoidal oscillation between critical points of intense sincerity and irony is a valid solution to the nihilism inherent in extreme postmodernity, Kanye instead manipulates for the oscillation of the listener's perception rather than affecting a self-defeatingl y earnest oscillation of himself. In this way, Yeezus can be seen as a work of meta-metamodernism. To call the album "ahead of its time" would be a vast understatement.

A few of my favorite lyricists right now are Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Joanna Newsom, Bob Dylan, and Syd Barrett. I like introspective folk music with lots of dream-like imagery, so if somebody could recommend me a singer-songwriter along those lines I'd be very appreciative.

I have a phd in song lyric analysis and I can tell you the real objective answers. I love Morrissey and Scott Walker but their lyrics are absolute shit. Scott Walker's later ones are good but more poems than song lyrics and always seemed to me a struggle between imagism and Pasolini. There's a lot of good songwriters in the romantic tradition, like Leonard Cohen, but the truly great songwriters of the 21st century like Stephen Merritt employ the language of popular culture and toy with cliche. The only truly literate post-modern songwriter is Nick Currie; the fact that no posts ITT mention him as "the greatest or most significant" songwriter of the contemporary age only tells you how far /lit/ is from a place for serious literary discourse.
