any opinions about themes or Esther's breakdown? curioussss.

>> No.487992

If you want to disguise a homework thread, don't use the word 'themes', it's terribly obvious.

>> No.488003

naw it's not for homework, but i can think of a few anyway. i just really like the book <:

saging plath thread

only reasons she's popular:
a. her husband
b. stuck her head in the oven
c. yuppie angst teens can relate
d. aforementioned kids with loving fathers are jealous of their molested friends, read Daddy and it's all over

She killed herself with her kids in the next room after having an easy life. Why do you support this?

>> No.488046

her life was not easy and i don't think those are the reasons she is popular. her dissention with society was setting her alone and she downspiraled as a result. sure teenagers today are shit and maybe they don't appreciate her for the right reasons, but she was quite an artist and made a statement by ending her own life. who cares how she did it? she goes against society in the form of suicide because conformity fucking sucks. and that's why i personally like her. because she stops putting up with the shit.

How selfish! Imagine how much it would fuck you up watching mom kill herself. Art or cruelty?

how is that even relevant to what i said?

The door was shut, the doorjambs were sealed so the kids wouldn't be effected by the gas. For a person depressed enough (mentally ill enough) to kill themselves, that's an impressive level of dedication and care for others. It proves her worth as a human being and as a mother.

>> No.488208

>>488027
She was writing from her mid twenties to her thirties. She was well out of her angsty teenage phase. That you think only angsty teens can relate is a result of you not growing out of your angsty teenage phase as an adult.

How can she be a good writer if she's dead?

>> No.488222

>>488027
she was poor and depressed living in UK. why wouldn't she kill herself?

also, just because she's popular doesn't mean she's a bad poet. her personal style mean that her life experiences cannot be separated from her work. whether this adds to her work's appeal or hinders it is a subjective point.

God I fucking hate people who exalt the mentally ill as some kind of superdeep metaphysical rebels. She killed herself because she was fucking crazy and depressed.

I like Plath, but this is true. Love her for her poetry, pity her for her death. It wasn't a noble or an artistic act. It wasn't a performance piece. She wanted her life to end because she was sick. It wasn't meant to convey a message to anyone, her family or fans included.

just wrong.

so uh

how did she die

did she die instantly, or did she have to leave herself in there to bake or something

inhaling the gases..
she probably took a while to pass out and then a longer while to die

Is it not true? Do you think she got some mystical superpower from her death?

She was depressed and committed suicide. Depression of her sort is a mental illness. She needed help but got one, and a disaster for her family and the world who appreciated her writing resulted.

Seeing this any other way is 'just wrong.'

No. It was just "I can't fucking take this shit anymore; I'm out." She had depression, psychological issues, and severe daddy issues for years and then the person who meant the most to her left her for another woman.

>>488276

wording it like that is fine, sure maybe she was depressed, but not "crazy"

Death by poisonous gas (in Plath's case, probably butane) isn't instantly fatal. In her case, she probably passed out and just never woke up.

No, she really was crazy. Read a biography of her. Enormous issues.

To elaborate, if it was butane that filled her kitchen, then it would have likely been asphyxiation, ventricular fibrillation, or a combination.
