/lit/, I decided to look back at the recommendation sticky since I havent for a while, and Ive forgotten how bad it is.

Does anyone know of a better list if you wanted to go through the western canon, eastern canon, and the modern canon?

>> No.4870287

Just use google. there are actual academics who have written those kinds of lists.

OP here, so I've been looking through these lists
>>4871987
and this is exactly what I've been looking for. Right now I am compiling all the lists into one so I can get the best sense of how cast the "canon" is.

But while doing this, something came up to me. Is it worth reading all of these works that arent originally in English? Should I only read works that I can understand through their native tongue? I am currently fluent in English, and getting there through French, so while I lose quite a bit and I can still read a good amount.

it's ridiculously obvious what the western canon is. you don't need lists to tell you

what have you read so far

Not that much, right now im looking through Bloom's list and I think im going to go with that since its the largest of the lists mentioned in
>>4871987

Still im wondering about my translation question
>>4872661

Also, im wondering if I should read a good word history, history of mathematics, grammar, and critical thinking book before beginning the list

Definitely yes. For anything in Russian, look for translations by Pevear & Volokhonsky

>Bloom's list

Keep in mind, it's something he came up with during a couple hours at the last minute because the publisher wanted a list at the end of his Western Canon book. He's disowned now and I'm probably thinks half the books in the last part are all period pieces.

What about in other languages besides French? Also, thanks

>>4872877
>>4872881
I've been thinking about that as well. I think im going to take the list as a basis for what I plan to read, and then when I come to a new book on the list, ill look it up and decide to read it or not. Ill only start doing this though around the 19th century and forward. Thanks for the heads up in any case

P/V translations are actually really really bad. Don't listen to the book jacket.

I'm not sure, I've liked multiple translators. P/V feel very plodding and stilted to me and after reading their Gogol I resolved to never read their translations again. Stories I really like and find very funny were an actual chore.
P/v are massively hyped to sell books

So I've finished bringing up the list, and Ive been researching different publishing houses and their translations.

Last question for my reading list.

Like I mentioned before
>>4872817
I think I should have some preliminary reading before I take on the list, specifically, a good book on world history, history of mathematics, critical thinking, grammar, and possibly linguistics.

Any suggestions?
