God damn, Xanth novels.

Get On a Pale Horse if you are gonna read some Piers Anthony.

If you aren't gonna read PA, get some dresden files.

The book is first in a series but works almost equally well as a standalone. I heartily recommend you to try this book out, and disregard the mention of historical romance on the Amazon Review (which is perhaps unfairly prejudiced of me...). I peeked and the "look inside" feature has the first thirty odd pages of the book in the system.
