hey /lit/ are there any specific rules, guidelines or themes that I have to follow when writing a particular genre in a fiction novel? or themes that are expected to be included in certian genres like a western, or sci-fi.

Yes, it's the definition of genre fiction. It's just like any other writing, you're only going to write shit unless you read a bunch and learn to appreciate what's good about what you're reading.

Not necessarily and sometimes writers are encouraged to try and push boundries and to be original but you will find that certain themes are going to become necessary to effectively tell the story. Like in sci fi you're going to need a time traveler from our era or a small town bumpkin that needs to have everything explained to him (think Luke Skywalker or Fry from Futurama) otherwise the reader won't know what the fuck is going on.

The story is mostly realistic but driven by a magical, often surreal element.
