Probably. A couple of my AP lit teachers in high school thought so, and my American Lit teacher at uni thinks he probably will as well. But then I know another teacher who finds his writing style to be "gimmicky." So I don't know, but I'm thinking yes.

Have you seen English class curricula and the ridiculous shit they study there lately? That something is taught in English class means jackshit.

"And a champion went out from the camp of the Hipsters, named David, from Illinois, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a white bandana on his head, and he was armed with a book written with no discernible talent, and the weight of the book was five thousand shekels of hype and over-rated complexity. And he had gay tennis shorts on his legs and a tennis racket between his shoulders, to make less conspicuous his sweat." (1 Samuel 17:4–7).

Not only that, but he gets most of the stuff wrong. After the first part about heroin, I had to put the book down. Why write about such drugs and lifestyles when you clearly have no idea what they're really like? It feels like a phoning in of cliches to lazily setup an atmosphere

>> No.4809227

>>4809206
so fucking what? no amount of weed you smoke will somehow make you knowledgeable about other drugs. Also, I read an angry article about DFW a few years back which had the drug topic as one of its foci. Apparently DFW uses info from books on drugs that were outdated in the 80s already, or something like that.

>> No.4809241

>>4809227
W-well, it's just that you said he "clearly had no idea what they're really like", and I just thought to correct you since that's not entirely true.

I'm very sorry to have upset you. I'm sure he was a terrible and horribly misinformed individual.

>> No.4809267

>>4809206

I thought he hit the pot stuff on the head, actually. It just confuses me why someone would attempt to write about something like heroin addiction without doing much research. Without any real reference all you have to go by is pop-culture depictions. That first section in ebonics feels like a quilt of after school special tier facts.

Surely you can see past the drug details. Its not non-fiction on the effects of narcotics. There are countless other levels to appreciate it on

See I always thought a limb of it was non-fiction. I honestly learned a bit of the drug-culture underbelly , however "real" it might be, plus there's the encyclopedic element of the endnotes (no idea what the /lit/ consensus on these is) and some of the sprawling descriptions of say tennis and rehab itself. It kind of reminds me of the album Endtroducing in its searching for raw information to bring into it, and how it actually wields its findings. I don't know, just a thought, I appreciate it nonetheless.

Also Hamlet wasn't a person. Gotcha bitch.

Yeah you got me there anon. Gawdamm danes :^) I would certainly agree that there is definitely a non-fiction kind of element to it and the encyclopedic quality of the end-notes definitely does attest to that. But I'm not going to hold it against him that he didn't start doing hard drugs as research for the book and definitely don't see it as essential to my enjoyment of the book that all of the drug-related details are spot-on
