those are to entice people who've already bought the book to buy it again

Agreed op. With classics I face this by pretending I'm back in time buying the book on release day. For modern shit just skip it, it's not why I opened the book. Fuck that boring shit.

Now you know that most of us skip the foreword/introduction and read it after the narrative.

They can be quite good in Penguins and Oxfords.

Enjoy your reading!

Forwards are good for providing context and historical information that the average reader wouldn't know. For instance, I didn't know shit about 16th century Italy before reading The Prince, so the forward helped with that.

I never read them anymore. When I was reading the Idiot by Dostoevsky, I was skimming through the boring introduction and it mentioned that Nastasia is stabbed by Rogozhin, essentially ruining the entire book.

Whelp, looks like I don't need to read this now. And neither do you.

How do you figure? If I'm dedicating hours of reading time to a lengthy novel, I don't want the end spoiled by the forward. Hence not reading the forward.

Definitely agreed, but when a forward is spoiling part of a story then that's a no no. I only read forewards first when it's non fiction. Otherwise I'll come back to it after I've finished the book.

The worst is back covers of classics that spoil the endings. I got a copy of Clarissa and the back reads: How Clarissa,.... falls prey to Lovelace, is raped and dies, is the bare outline of a story that blossomed in all directions under Richardson's hands. and I think I got a copy of Madame Bovary someplace that has a back cover that spoils everything as well.

And spoilers in forwards are a problem with ebooks. I was reading a classic and a character shows up that I'd forgotten so I searched for his name and the first hit was a spoiler in the forward.
