I just like how multiple anons fleshed out the character over the length of the thread? and the use of the multiple perspectives. no hidden or deep reasons. I was lurking when it was live, so maybe it seemed more immediate? but fuck that, it's still good.

That was meh. The Ulysses one was better. I'm not convinced that was really Pynchon either. Besides I run into good philo and theory threads on here all the time. Disputing an author's biography is fun, but is basically a waste of one's time, a haggling over crackpot conspiracy theories.

I haven't read much Pynchon save TCoL49 and Gravity's Rainbow, but am I missing something? I didn't read the man's posts too intently, what suggests he's Pynchon?

re: Thurn & Taxis: remember, please, that Thurn und Taxis was a real royal family, not something that Pynchon made up. I think that the connection to Rilke is way more interesting than the badger thing: Rilke began his Duino Elegies – which are, if I remember correctly, quoted several times in Gravity's Rainbow – at the castle of the Thurn und Taxis family in northern Italy.

He doesn't have to have made it up in order to use its name to his advantage. And the Rilke thing is interesting, thematically, but it's not the "secret answer" that the guy from that thread was claiming Torquato Tasso was. The better argument is "Holy shit, that is some super-convoluted reasoning about badgers and towers and poems by Shelley. How the fuck is that supposed to convince me?"
