Real life sucks.
Your stupid try-hard threads suck.
Your "haha look at this hipster shit i read ironically" threads suck.

What are some good escapes people might not know about?

Just finished "The Shadow of the Torturer." I'm almost apprehensive about starting "The Claw of the Conciliator," because I know at the end of the first book things were on the verge of going to hell, as Sevarian himself admits.

But of course I have to keep reading. It's already my favorite book series ever.

And while BotNS isn't really underrated here on /lit/, I always get the sense that broader fans of fantasy and sci-fi don't think about it much.

Have some more then. Composer is Hildegard Von Bingen, for what I have read on the net, century is XI-XII. But you really never know... sounds delightful anyway.

The middle two books are absolutely insane. I'm not even going to say anything other than that it takes Claw a chapter or two to stretch its legs before balls meet wall.

>I always get the sense that broader fans of fantasy and sci-fi don't think about it much.
Sci-fi/fantasy fans have read an average of 2 series at most and a smattering of single novels, or have read most of the cornerstones and are working through everything else. It's a very all or nothing group from my experience.

I just finished the third book. I'm not really big into lit but I got into that because I heard the game Myth took a lot from it. While Myth did indeed take a large number of elements from it, the themes and tone are a lot different. While people hype it as a soldier's story, the main character often finds himself in every major event, on personal levels with the highest of powers, and hanging around in taverns more than camps.

Not really that important, but Myth also has a god tier narrator while the audio books sounds like shit for Black Comapany.

no no no the best escape is in listening to the absolutely ordinary and mundane written about so interestingly and romanticised in ways that makes you appreciate the own things you do in life, because then it doesn't leave when you finish the book

Making drugs in your own drug lab. It's a cathartic experience. All life drains away and nothing matters but the reaction. The ritual of setting up and tearing down the lab, predicting problems and creating solutions all engage the brain like a clutch engages a transmission. All that matters is the reaction. You meter out the chemicals, measure properly, set up your hood vent powered by Dyson, set up your glassware and crank on your stove. Better out on gloves, in goes the lye. The only thing that matters is the reaction.

Anon here. I'm just now starting to get into the sci-fi/fantasy genre and came to /lit/ for the first time ever in search of something that had reviews like you two just gave.

However, I have no fucking earthly clue what BotNS stands for.

Thanks in advance.

The Book of the New Sun, by Gene Wolfe.

It's much more literary than the average sci-fi work, but if you're used to literary fiction, it shouldn't be an issue.

Anything by Joe Abercrombie. The guy's one non-fantasy novel away from gaining world wide recognition.

Has anyone read The Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop or The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny?

Looking for some thoughts.

TBotNS, so, so, so much.

I was obsessed by it on my first read. I couldn't think of other books while reading it, I had dreams about the book and I was haunted by all its mysteries. I knew it was too deep and complex to read at the rate I was reading it but I just had to keep going, and it was great even though I didn't understand much of it.

At least the first two books were great. I loved Sword and Citadel but I thought they had lost some momentum.
Now that I'm re-reading it I'm finding that Swodd & Citadel are amazing, not better or worse than Shadow & Claw, but rather different.

Btw, something funny happened today
I was reading on the train, about to finish the chapters of Severian on board the Samrú (the boat that takes him to the Citadel at the end of book 4). I look up and there's this guy with a half sleeve in front of me. I'm thinking his tattoo looks like shit when I realize it's Jesus, half naked with his arms open wide, like if he was on the cross, with his crown of thorns and bushy thorny things everywhere on the design. If that wasn't weird as fuck, I noticed that right above this Jesus, there's a 3-masts ship, just like in the book.

Yeah, i've seen the size of them (Amazon says both around 1200 pages) they're pretty cheap considering you get 3 in 1 and 10 in 1 for around £15 each.

Might just take the plunge.
