At first I really didn't like this book cover series; I thought that the black and white shapes were sloppy or naive and the typography combination was ugly. I still don't like them very much, but if you think of the sunlight motif in The Stranger, and how the rectangles in Resistance, Rebellion, and Death are all competing for space and pushing against one another, and how in The Rebel's cover those two lines go against the pattern established in the background and reverse the black-on-white with white-on-black, the ideas behind the covers help justify the designs. Still, I'd see these as sketches during the process to a more complete looking design. It's nice to stay simple, but I think these are a little too spare.

I've always been a big fan of the M&D cover, and it's been the same for approaching 20 years.

The typography is nice: the combination of that and the paper gives you that nice 18th century anachronism that Pynch was going for. And I know there's still likley a hidden meaning in the

which is probably why it hasn't changed.

I feel you. I thought it might be a funny or interesting aesthetic for Kafkaesque surrealism. The style of noir and 1950s b-movie seemed appropriate at the time.

I wanted to use something with negative & positive space only with the main image, because I thought that contrasts through alienation were important in Kafka's writing. The Trial is the most obvious; it's the bars of a jail cell cutting the silhouetted figure bust apart. The Metamorphosis uses the idea of a bug being squashed. I used a human body because Gregor becomes like an insect, with the various symbolic connotations that come with it. The Castle shows alienation again. It also shows futility against a higher power which has influence over the protagonist. A pawn is the weakest chess piece and the eponymous castle is the ominous rook in the image. I hope that helps to support my design.

Pulp- Bukowski. The cover is just like his books; they just tell you simply what you need to know.

The Great Gatsby. It's the time period looking within itself. Being released in 1925, this book was a reminder to the generation (at least within northern urban cities) that their rash actions without thought of consequence is reckless. The flapper, with the city below her and behind her as a tear falls from her eyes...and the eyes...the naked woman. She woman is seeing herself bare. There is no longer a facade. She is realizing who she is and what she has done as regret finally is unleashed from it's repression and surfaces. The cover IS the book, in this case.

The Kurt Vonnegut 'V' series. They look the way the book feels.

Fahrenheit 451- A fireman (book burner) is seen covered in pages and on fire. It holds the theme that if you burn the knowledge of man you are also burning yourself. Destroying knowledge is destroying civilization, man, life.

My dad is a huge Tolkien nerd and has the original limited printing of the Silmarillion with that cover. Pretty ballin. All told my dad's Tolkien collection is probably worth over $10k. He's been collecting and leaving shit in the wrapping for like 30 years now.

I started collecting different versions of Lord of the Rings recently, wish I had started earlier with that since a lot of the older, nicer versions are hardly available any more or used or only at crazy prices.

this one's great, German version, I only have a shitty one.
