Stephen King's short fiction tends to be absolutely solid. Some of his stories are better than his best novels. Examples: The Mist and The Body (AKA Stand By Me).

Rust and Bone, A Mean Utility, On Sleepless Roads by Craig Davidson are great.

TC Boyle has busted out some god-tier short stories, too, but he has written so many that I'm having trouble calling specifics to mind. I remember really liking Tooth and Claw and Chicxulub though.

A&P by John Updike.

Sea Oak by George Saunders. Link here: http://www.barcelonareview.com/20/e_gs.htm

I've just started reading his short cuts collextion, so I've only been through 2-3. Liked They're not your husband as well, though. Although, how am I supposed to interpret his endings? Like, after 3 stories I'm still kind of confused at the end of each...am I dumb
