Sounds like I struck a nerve.

The issue isn't empathy, or the lack of it, but the fact that the book is famous because it appeals to a certain type of boy between the age of 10 and 15 - smarter than the people around him (although not by as much as he thinks he is) and angry because nobody cares about that fact. The whole thing is an escapist fantasy for those kids - about a young boy who's just so smart that even though his family life sucks and he's bullied by his peers, eventually they all have to obey him so he can use his genius to save the entire world. It's a vicarious validation of the whole angsty 'my life sucks but at least I'm smart' you find in geeky, undersocialized, unpopular teenage boys.
