Philosophy in the Bedroom is entry-level libertinism.

120 Days of Sodom was just a mess, Sade never got a chance to organize or edit it. All of his novels are superior. Keep in mind that libertine writings were partially a reaction against the Enlightenment in the same was Hume and Tristram Shandy were.

The Misfortunes of Virtue (aka Justine) and other Early Tales is a nice oxford classics collection of de sade. The short stories are very funny and philosophical. 120 days of sodom is a little too much

more specifically, The Misfortunes of Virtue is (as I understand it) a pared down version of Justine. It is a little less risque but also (probably) more readable. The plot is still largely the same but I think it skips out on some of the weirder sex acts. I think the full Justine is available online, but in any case the other stories in the collection are probably worth it if you are trying to ease into De Sade before tackling the other stuff

>partially a reaction against the Enlightenment

In a way, Sade is Enlightment pushed to its very end. Justine always reminds me of Candide.

Stroy of O perhaps fits the bill, OP.

He got autistic about all his great works and kept adding to them throughout his life.
The final, unabridged version of Juliette and Justine is over 4000 pages

Name writers before de Sade that make 120 Days of Sodom recycled

>> No.4663758

>>4663753
The scenarios he uses are recycled throughout the book. By the time it gets to outlines, you've already read almost every scenario.

oops, my bad, I interpreted you to be saying that he was basically reusing old material from other writers. Not that I understand you, I agree.
