Is "degeneracy" the ultimate spook? Rarely do you find consistent definitions.

Spooks are the ultimate spooks.

>> No.4624199

Ultimate as in final? No. We'll keep coming up with new ones as prejudices change.

Ultimate as in highest level or most powerful? Nah. It fundamentally still a sub-ordinate to the basic Other. I know we all hate to break out the literary theory buzzwords, but the fact remains: 'degeneracy' is just another way to draw a line between the things you do like/represent and the things you don't.

i think that's what he was saying. degeneracy is whatever you want it to be and that's what makes it the ultimate spook. people have been bemoaning the death of culture since the birth of culture

Yeah, but degeneracy remarks pretty clearly on moral failures (or signifiers thereof). But it doesn't refer to other 'Others' in any rational worldview.

A man born with a birth defect can be an Other without morality (and by extension, degeneracy) coming into play. You could make a similar argument for matters of race.

The only way such things get tied up in a person's own morality is by the flawed analysis of the person distributing the term 'degenerate'.

In a nutshell: all degenerates are Others, but not all Others are degenerates.

Does anyone believe in degeneracy as an ideal? I didn't think so.

yolo, hedonism, fuck da police, sound familiar?

>> No.4624681

The spook itself is indeed the ultimate spook. It is only after one has overcome the notion of 'spook' that self-actualization is possible, though it is a necessary stepping stone.

Degenerate merely means "seemingly moving away from what I consider my arbitrary unfounded mythical golden age to be like" in most cases.

>Is "degeneracy" the ultimate spook?

It's merely a reaction to an even greater "spook": the idea of progress.

>> No.4624852

That people hold the opposite of degeneracy as an ideal. Note that this notion of non-degeneracy (some sort of cultural vitality or haleness?) is even more obscure than that of degeneracy itself.

It's no different from the abuse of "communist" in the 1950s or the abuse of "racist," "sexist," "anti-Semite," "homophobe," etc. today. They're all expressions that indicate the target does not conform to one's moral views, which the speaker holds to be true.

>> No.4625289

Degeneracy is a term people use to attack things that are deviant that they are adverse to.
