If you were free to choose your surname (Last name) and thus create a new lineage, what would you choose?

Is Raskolnikov too tacky?

>> No.4616833

Why would you want to choose Raskolnikov?

>> No.4616849

>>4616830
Raskolnikov comes from the word raskolnik, which means schismatic. Also, the character is a murderer and the last person you'd want to name yourself after. If you were to choose a name from Crime and Punishment, it's best you go with Razumikhin.

I'd need a very spacious estate between the mountains and the sea before I considered something like that; and a large, spacious house with an atrium or courtyard, made of thick granite blocks.
Then I would probably make a surname either from Latin or basic Germanic English. It would be quite plain and descriptive - Stonehouse, to take a drably obvious example.

Yeah, don't go with Raskolnikov. Fantastic character, but you don't want the connnotation that goes with his name.

As a sweidhs person I would love to take the old noble name "Natt och Dag", which literally means "Night and Day".

Nah, my people are from Alsace. French-German, you know.

They came to the US to, according to an old letter, "stay out of the way of Kaiser Willy and the boys." They suspected, correctly, that the border between France and Germany would soon be an unpleasant place to live.

They did well for themselves in New England, soon becoming rich and respected by cornering the horse-shoe-nail market. Then those damnable horseless carriages caught on and they lost it all. And then they made it back again, in finance, just in time to send some extra sons back to the old country to support the French Resistance. Got a Legion of Honor medal out of it.

Family history is interesting.

Well obviously you would have to choose something new or it isn't a new lineage.
You can't name yourself after someone already famous because you will suffer from being in the shadow of the original.
And also it needs to roll of the tongue.
(Btw yes Raskolnikov is too tacky)
Hellfeuer is a great name for example, it means "bright fire" in german, has a cultural ring to it and just plain sounds nice.
Hellfeuer is the kind of guy you hear people talking about and want to get to know yourself.
Hellfeuer would also be a great name for a philosopher, come to think of it.

Honestly, I wouldn't change it. Got a random Italian last name that ain't related to any important meaning or person in history as far as I know. It ain't even catchy or anything, but that's actually the reason I like it, it's just a stupid, low profile name that won't ever draw attention to me.

No, but there are other people named Lawless, mainly from Irish or English ancestry.

My ancestry is predominantly Irish but I don't really want to take the name of the Irish side of my family. My current last name is some generic shit that was probably handed out at Ellis Island. I'd like to have something that has a personal meaning but still recognizes a little cultural context.

Since I'm an adult, I already am.
