Anyone else think this book was absolute shite? A friend recommended this to me. After reading it (struggling the entire time, I might add, what with terrible dialogue, stiff characterization, and terrible writing overall) I truly feel like punching her to death.

I definitely agree. I quite like the manga, but there tends to be something really awkward about books translated from Japanese to English.

Wind-Up Bird Chronicle was the only book of that nature I've read that wasn't.

OP hurr. I could tell; there was a lot about the characterization/dialogue that just hinted at the drastic cultural gap between Japan and the U.S.
