As a man driven to be better than he was the day before, how will Thus Spoke Zarathustra hold as my lifelong "bible?"

I just ordered this exact edition. Considered all translations but I want the B&N one.

It's an interesting text but it isn't very practical.

You won't really understand how you can improve your life from reading it.

On the other hand, it is very useful in analyzing Nietzsche's critique of society and the values of his day.

It also requires a very firm grasp on what Nietzsche's philosophy already is. Zarathustra is essentially all that Nietzsche has hinted at or elaborated upon prior but translated into the form of metaphor.

If you're looking for a "bible" from Nietzsche, tough luck. He's an anti-Christian. He doesn't write in that dogmatic Christian form. Hence it doesn't make sense to look for it in his works.

Doesn't Zarathustra himself says i you want to really be his follower you have to despise it and reject him at some point.

Welcome to postmodernism, kid.

Dude, get the Del Caro translation. Common and Kaufmann and Hollingdale are all less than ideal. Pick up the Cambridge texts edition, has some good supplementary readings.

A very close reading of Zarathustra + The Gay Science can suffice for desert island phil material.

Nietzsche belonged to late romantic era. This isn't postmodernism (although it prepares postmodernism in a way), this is the theory of the übermensch. "Man is something that needs to be overcome", that's the geist.

Just read the actual bible,

it turns out every person's experience is fundamentally the same so it doesn't matter which book you read.

The answer to that question is ALWAYS "lie, steal and deceive," though. Odysseus' MO is always the same.

I'm not saying that lying, stealing and deceiving are a BAD way to go through life.

I'm just saying, lying and stealing are sort of the core of Odysseus' skillset. From escaping Polyphemus to hiding his appearance among the suitors, Odysseus lies. That's just what he does. And he's very good at it.

So yes, 'lie and steal' is almost always what Odysseus would suggest in any given situation. It worked out well for him.
