Is it just me or has Bolano become the new token relatively contemporary non-English writer everyone likes - like Murakami?

Also is 2666 really that good?

Like a lot of novels in the "highly ambitious, enormous post-modern novel encompassing many countries and dozens to hundreds of characters" genre it is fitfully brilliant, often difficult and obscure, sometimes exciting and sometimes frustrating.

Thanks, I'm convinced now. Adding to the wishlist.

Looking forward to the translations coming out in the next year or so.

2666 really is that good, but you shouldn't overlook his other stuff, all of which is more..accessible?

It's funny you should mention Murakami because there are definately traces of 'the wind up bird chronicles' in '2666'. Whatever, they're both still in my top 5 books of all time.

His short story collection 'last evenings on earth' is phenomenal as well. He is just outrageously talented!

i think it was bcause the hype for 2666 spilled into the mainstream

Too bad he died in 2003 before he ever got successful.
For a while he mostly lived from small sums of prize money he would win all over south-america, travelling from one reception to another, because he could not live from his publishing alone.
And its pretty unlikely that he was influenced by Murakami. I read a bunch of his essays and he hardly ever mentions any author that is not south-american or a real classic.

Too bad on one hand, but..he needed to be dying to write 2666.
