Great book. A lot of people aren't ready for it when they read it: thus the hatred for it. They honestly don't understand it, but they'll get upset with you if you say so. Listen, I'm not insulting your intelligence. You wouldn't teach calculus to a kid right after multiplication, would you? Same thing. There's a foundation of literature between whatever else kids read in high school and Catcher in the Rye the size of a mountain. It gets taught in high schools because our educational system is painfully retarded, and they think: it's about a high schooler, therefore it's for high schoolers, therefore I will teach it to my high schoolers. Pfff. Fuck off. Teaching this book to kids in high school is a perversion of nature. It would be like high school chemistry teachers instructing their students in bomb-making.

I'm not silly at all. We're actually saying the same thing -- the only difference is I'm proposing a specific reason why those who didn't get it, didn't. i understood the point, morals, and context of the book. i can appreciate why so many people like it and why it's so important, and in time i may even come to appreciate it (im 16), but most of what i was thinking throughout the book was "HOLY FUCK HOLDEN YOU ARE SUCH A PHONY JUST SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH AND GO HOME"
