Depends on whether you want to read for self-aggrandization or for enjoyment.

What then separates a good book from a masterpiece?

Which statement? Yes, one should try to avoid bad art as much as they can.

Seems pretty obviously true to me. You only live so long, why waste your life reading shit when you could read masterpieces instead?

Read whatever you want. Life is too short to waste time on the classics if you'd rather be reading about Jaime and Cersei getting it on.

It takes way longer to process poetry and antique language than it does to process GGRM's bread and a little smear of butter prose, so they're not really equivalent as the image suggests.

Yeah I'm never reading Dostoyevsky because I honestly don't give a shit about old dry literature unless it's sci-fi or philosophy, but I'll still read warhammer 40K even though it's pleb as shit. I guess those aren't really conflicting statements, but still fuck old boring shit being "classic". Orchestral and classical sucks too, even big band is better.

This

It's a false equivalency
You've got to take the reading level into account, you can go through ASOIAF in a week or so, it's much harder to breeze through the classics, and why would you want to?
It'd be different if you were ONLY reading things like Game of Thrones or Stephen King, and not reading any philosophy or literature, but to just play a zero sum game and say "You only get to read so many pages in your life so every book that isn't lit-core is a waste of time" is just silly.

If you're going to invoke opportunity cost like that, why not just say.

"You all should be reading instead of posting on 4chan."
For that matter, quit your jobs, dump your gf's and stop playing video games. It's all taking time that you could have used on "In Search of Lost Time"

>> No.4497755

Why not read both serious literature and genre fiction? I just finished read animal farm after reading a feast for crows. I'm going to read the count of monte Cristo and then a dance with dragons. Mix It up nigga, not just lit and genre fiction, but also time periods, male/female authors, etc.

We wouldn't know the true greatness of literary masterpieces if we didn't also have the dreck. Also, from a writing standpoint, it's valuable to have models of what to avoid.

IMO if you stick to reading what's good, it means you read what others already stated as good. But everyone has it's own preference.
You should instead read what captures your attention, discarding the general opinion. That's the only way to discover what's good for you.
Remember, when you read you read for yourself, not for others.
The world is full of people that read books like 1984 because is generally considered as good, but of these just a small percentage read it just because it captures their attention, and many of them go through it without really enjoing it, without taking real interest in what's written in it, and then annoy the others quoting the book everytime they see a CCTV camera on the street.

It's pretty uninformed. I like to think it's a small but vocal minority of people prejudiced against genre literature. And I didn't take the image as anti-genre anyway, just anti-Martin. If I were feeling saucy I'd argue those titles are early genre lit.
