Welp, I just finished today the Odyssey and really liked it, over everything the polymath Odysseus that I loved even reading the Iliad (just before the Odyssey), the wider variety in comparison to the other poem, and the pitiful tears the brokenhearted men (the meeting with the mother!), but, son, I prefer the Iliad: this furious clash between population, between men, the unfair fate and these brave but nevertheless humans that deal with death, and, in fact, the last book shows how even a war machine, a great warrior, in the end is only a mere human that encounters the inevitable death like any othe one, and his body will eventually perish. More tears than I thought.

better question:
was there a Homer?

>> No.4494601

>>4494548
Homer was a rhapsodist, not a writer, and that can also be confirmed thanks to the repetitions that have the purpose of being stored in the minds of the listeners (exactly like rhetoric), so someone wrote the poems for him, like a cadet or so; we can't truly know if Homes was precisely the rhapsodist or the writer itself but what can be assured is that the two poems are orally composed: why? We don't know, was Homer blind, or a simple illiterate? We will never know, but that's the game.

Contrariwise Hesiod, probably, was even a writer.

The Odyssey is crap compared to the Iliad. The Iliad is about the effect that anger has on nobility, and is surprisingly sympathetic to its women and to the people of Troy. It also contains a lot of wisdom about mortality.
The Odyssey is is misogynistic because of Odysseus's philandering, racist and ethnocentric because the rest of the world as degenerate by birth or as a sideshow, and everything is picaresque meant for mere entertainment. It ends with Odysseus slaughtering a group of people. It's a savage work.

All I'm gonna say is, I have an unabridged audiobook of the Fagles Translation, read by Sir Ian McKellan (Fucking Gandalf) and it's god damn amazing.
