his hobby his proffesional bird watching. When you take that into account there is nothing humourous about his remark.

>Has he done something recently that I missed?

Yes, he wrote a rather scathing letter to the American public, telling it that he would rival all the Kardashians in fame if only the public were even a fraction smarter than it was. In said letter, he lambastes the Internet and Facebook in specific, but mostly scolds the populace for allowing these time vampires to become so successful. "You're all drunk," Franzen wrote in the final, concluding paragraph of the letter, "drunk off porntube and Chicken McNuggets. You're just about drowning in the stuff."

I believe a hashtag or two has been made in the wake of this missive.

Some people say yes, most say no.

Just read excerpts on-line and decide for yourself if you want to continue.

(Having read three of his books, my personal answer to your question is "no".)

AND BY THE WAY, BY "WON" I MEAN WON AGAINST DAVID FOSTER WALLACE IN THEIR COMPETITIVE RELATIONSHIP

>> No.4492779

>>4492548
I mean, he's not wrong. I think his only misstep was squaring the success of the Kardashians against the (comparative) lack of his own success. It just makes him look bitter. Which I'm sure he is. But he's still not wrong.

He LITERALLY** stops the book to start talking to you about the environment. It doesn't explicitly break the fourth wall but you still feel condescended towards.

**Literally here meaning the actual definition of literally, not some hyperbolic usage

>>4492758
He only won because Dave quit and pissed off Franzen to no end. I don't think he's quite over it. Losing someone you see as a best friend and a rival would be an odd feeling, and his writing since has been tinged with a pretty obvious anger.

The Corrections is outstanding. Freedom isn't quite as good but still far superior to most recent fiction.
