Literally just finished this trilogy. In the middle of that empty-post-book-feel.
What are /lit/s thoughts on Phillip Pullmans Dark Materials

>> No.4470271

read firsr 2 books and got bored after that

really?? I really enjoyed it. Despite the reservations I had about the first book, after that I figured it picked up

>> No.4470342

I love everthing about this series.
Except the balloon guy bores me. Dunno why.
Why do the Xtians care so much about HP and ignore these books?

>> No.4470344

I really like it, it's my favorite young fantasy saga.

The ending is really sad though. It was like unnecessary sad, but still good.

>> No.4470806

Fucking atrocious

>> No.4470840

First book was pretty good, but it went downhill after that.

>> No.4470852

>>4470840
Are you five?
The first book is like the introduction.

>> No.4470913

The audiobook is fantastic, but it's kind of off-putting if you listened to The Stands' audiobook.

>> No.4470941

>>4470852
Then clearly Pullman is only good at writing introductions.

>> No.4470971

For the audience it's written for it is the best book of its type.

Trash compared to The Dark is Rising

>> No.4472850

I'm halfway through the first one and bored. Does it get better?

Lol? You must be young. This book and than the movie were boycotted and ban to hell by Christians.

>> No.4473806

It's pretty bad imo. The Narnia series is better.

>> No.4474646

Why do Christians hate this trilogy so much? Isn't it about steampunk wizards and talking polar bears?

>> No.4474649

>>4472850
Not really. First one is definitely the highlight of the trilogy.

Was really disappointed when I finished the third book.

>>4474646
Author made coments saying he wanted it to be an atheist version of Narnia. The third book also involves killing God and the second one spends some time with evolution.

Basically everything that would piss off a right-wing fundamentalist is found in this series.

>> No.4474804

i really enjoyed them when i was 11

>> No.4474944

I read the series one summer while my internet was out and I found them to be bretty good. Definitely among the best of the YA genre along with the Mortal Engines series.

>> No.4475884

It is great. I have read it several times and each timeit almost made me want to cry in the end. Best book series ever

>> No.4476174

>>4474649
Sounds bretty edgy. Ill have to pick it up.

>> No.4476246

Definitely the best YA series I read when I was young.

I thought the second book was the best.

>> No.4476276

An implication should be noted wherein the real God is a kind of dust which lives between dimensions and the one everyone worships is false, making this more Gnostic than atheist. Kinda like Preacher, it's obvious the Golden Throne is the real God and God is just some dude the Throne made.

My favorite books ever, this whole series. Lyra is daughteru.

Tfw you know Lyra and Will are never going to be. God I hoped he slipped it in.

Lyra was a lesbian anyway.

>As Mary said that, Lyra felt something strange happen to her body. She found a stirring at the roots of her hair: she found herself breathing faster. She had never been on a roller-coaster, or anything like one, but if she had, she would have recognized the sensations in her breast: they were exciting and frightening at the same time, and she had not the slightest idea why. The sensation continued, and deepened, and changed, as more parts of her body found themselves affected too. She felt as if she had been handed the key to a great house she hadn't known was there, a house that was somehow inside her, and as she turned the key, deep in the darkness of the building she felt other doors opening too, and lights coming on. She sat trembling, hugging her knees, hardly daring to breathe, as Mary went on:

Your a fucking idiot, she's just discovering her sexuality as a woman, she fell in love with Will.

>> No.4478405

>>4478390

She falls in love with Jesus' mother, Mary. The book has a lot of Christian themes.

>> No.4478745

>>4478405
Then why do they have romance and obviously have sex?

>> No.4478754

>>4478405
Anti-Christian themes maybe.

>> No.4479959

Fun, exciting, provocative, easy read.
