So she leaves town, has an affair, follows a conspiracy, but what does it all mean? What's the relevance of it all? What is it trying to tell me? The shallowness of American life?

Ah, thanks. I understand now. It's a rubbish book.

>The shallowness of American life?
What does that mean? Where did you get that phrase from and why are you mentioning it now? Because you believe it is really relevant to this book? Or because it's a cliched phrase that sounds like it has some meaning and you are searching for meaning and that's the first thing that popped into your head?

The last part. It's all I could connect as an arbitrary theme to the book, with the airy-headed meandering Oedipa does.

It's all about a breakdown of communication. Every letter Mucho sends her is inane, meaningless. The whole plot of "The Courier's Tragedy" was driven by miscommunication between characters. The conspiracies, secrets, symbols, all serve to further distort the means by which information is conveyed to both characters and the reader, not to mention the disjointed phone conversations with Hilarius. Oedipa doesn't know if she's following something real or if the whole thing's a hoax. Really, in trying to "get it", you're playing right into Pynchon's hands: he's relying on your motive to find synchronicity, put meaning into the meaningless. Really, there's a whole Sparknotes section dedicated to this book: maybe you should try that to get the gist of it a little more.

Well thanks, mate, this has helped me the most. I just found myself desperately searching for a why, how the various events connected to the great over-arching plot, but I guess that wasn't the point of the novel. Much appreciated.

tl;dr much, is this a review of bleeding edge or a god damn full pynhon analysis?

No, that was the exact point of the novel - for you to be duped into falling for it, only to find out it's all smoke and mirrors.
