Someone gifted me this, I think it's really bad but I don't want to offend them and just keep reading.

Is this really bad or am I just a pleb?

>> No.4460115

The latter.

>> No.4460122

WHY WOULD YOU DISLIKING THE NOVEL OFFEND THE PERSON WHO GIFTED YOU THE BOOK?

>> No.4460136

I thought it was awful. Dumb concept, dull execution. The silliness of the finale where he meets a group of human books had me laughing.

>>4460122
It may not offend them, but it could hurt their feelings.

>> No.4460137

Liked the concept but didnt like the ending

movie is lame too

>it could hurt their feelings.

WHY? THEY DID NOT WRITE IT.

Why do you think its bad? Apart from the end, which was corny.

Because they offered it hoping to provide something valuable, and instead gifted a burden. This may make them feel foolish, as well as guilty for wasting someones time.

Have you never given someone a gift that wasn't well received? Have you never got one that you thought was rubbish? Or do you just have trouble empathizing with humans?

>> No.4460171

Just finish it and put it away. Short book anyway.

Some niggaz...

I'm only 60 pages in but it feels directionless. Made up as the author went along.

I don't like the bizarro future, things are over the top and just there to be weird, sometimes there's a metaphor behind it but rarely.

And the Clarisse character is just ridiculous. But I'm gonna finish it maybe it will pick up.

>instead gifted a burden

WHY A BURDEN? HE IS NOT BEING COERCED OR COMPELLED TO READ; IF HE DISLIKES IT, HE CAN STOP READING IT.

A BURDEN IS SOMETHING FROM WHICH ONE CANNOT ESCAPE/SOMETHING OF WHICH ONE CANNOT GET RID.

>Have you never given someone a gift that wasn't well received?

I DO NOT KNOW.

>Have you never got one that you thought was rubbish?

YES, I HAVE.

>Or do you just have trouble empathizing with humans?

YES; MY EMPATHETIC ABILITY IS PARTIAL, BUT THIS IS UNRELATED TO EMPATHY; THIS RATHER CONCERNS THE GIFTER'S IRRATIONALITY AND EMOTIONAL OVERSENSITIVITY.

THE GIFTER HAS NO REASON TO FEEL OFFENDED, OR "EMOTIONALLY HURT" DUE TO THE RECEIVER NOT LIKING THE NOVEL; THE GIFTER'S INTENTION BEING IRRELEVANT.

Wait, why? I read it a couple years ago but I thought the city blew up and that was basically that.

>> No.4460498

Very superb book. I used to read it in when I was in kindergarten, oh, I mean, a baby.

>> No.4460507

The book is actually a bunch of short stories that got thrown together in a novel, which would account for the clumsy pacing and directionless approach.

I agree, not a well written book. I still enjoyed it at times though

No, this book was made by a peasent, brother. It is bad, you must have read another book.

Not that the book is perfect, but you shouldn't dare criticize it without reading it first.

Because nobody has giant TVs or shuts out the world with their earbuds or anything.

So apparently it's not actually an anti-censorship statement?

>> No.4460638

>>4460617

No. The actual message of the book is modern illiteracy. People who have the education and wealth to read but don't.

There's an interview somewhere with Bradbury where he gets all pissed that people keep misunderstanding the theme of this really basic novel.

>> No.4460646

>>4460617

Bradbury publicly excoriated a presenter making that claim. The book is against ceding your critical thinking to others.

Well to me it was all about what happens if the means of education and knowledge are perverted into entertainment.

This article discusses the matter and details, for example, Bradbury's response to a class discussion he attended:
