I want to read literary criticism written by people who are not feminists, marxists, or psychoanalysis fanbois. Oh and no colonialism bullshit, either.

Does such a thing exist?

why even bother reading criticism if you just want to affirm your own opinions and biases?

look into New Historicism.

1. The same argument can be applied (with far greater persuasive power) on the writing of criticism. Why write it from a fixed, biased POV?

2. If I wanted to learn about marxism I'd read books on marxist economics, political theory, or political philosophy. If I wanted to learn about colonialism I'd open a history book. And so forth.
Simply put, the literature profs don't even know shit about the ideas they abuse, so there's absolutely no point in having keeping an open mind toward them.

You don't think most feminist critics have read extensive amounts of feminist philosophy? What.

So what, does reading philosophy make you a good philosopher? Of course not.

Read literary criticism written before ~1940.

I like Mark Van Doren.

Also look into The New Criticism and Northrop Frye's Archetypal Criticism. It stresses the structure of work/of literature above all else.

Read something from the early 20th century. I recommend A.C. Bradley and his book on Shakespearean Tragedy.

"New Criticism"

>> No.4461935

Look for authors writing about other authors. Franzen has a few essays of criticism scattered through his nonfiction, Colm Toibin's New Ways to Kill Your Mother is fantastic, James Baldwin has a great one on Norman Mailer.

I recommend books with Michael Dirda.
