Hey /lit/ my gf is looking for a book similar to American Psycho, she really likes those disturbing books with murder and stuff. Any help? Are a lot of Brett Easton Ellis books similar?

Glamorama is to the 90's what American Psycho was to the 80's.

Apparently Ellis was very influenced by Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion

Not really so much a "book", but I thought that Martin McDonagh's play "The Pillowman" was pretty fucked up. It's a short read.

OP I second this and I'd add Nathanael West's Miss Lonely Hearts or The Day of the Locust. Play it as it Lays is compared to West's work and I think he's kind of a forgotten master. Also Ellis' novel Less Than Zero explores some of the hopelessness present in American Psycho albeit differently and with less violence. She may also enjoy the short stories of George Saunders specifically the volume Civilwarland in Bad Decline and Pastoralia.

Try "Kill Your Friends" by John Niven.

It's about a ruthless talent scout in the Brittish music industry. It's a little lighter on social commentary, but more humorous and just as dark with a truly unpleasant narrator.

BEE basically took A Rebours and added murder.

Read A Rebours. It's better anyway.

This is the first book I read this year, and it blew my fucking mind. I heartily recommend it to both you and your girlfriend.

Tell her to read The Room by Hubert Selby Jr. and then see if she still wants to read books like these.

Seconding this. It's long, but gripping and very gruesome in parts. If she just likes the gore, try her on the Cobra Event- it's about a virus that causes you to eat yourself. That, or Battle Royale is one I haven't read but I've heard lots of good things about it

Of course he is. Those short stories are from his early 80s period. They read just like his EPs back then.

I've read this, have a signed copy from Michael :3 It's fantastic, if you like early Swans lyrics, and the feel of the music, you'll love it. His writing bludgeons you, it's great :D
