There are broader definitions of pleasure in the world than the ones advocated by Epicurus. (That I know of. Much was lost) For me, this leaves room for altruistic-epicurianism.

I've identify myself as a progressive liberal before, then all the commies come and call me a rightwinger. I'm actually for phasing capitalism out, raising people up (or lowering) to what the Marxist call "bourgeois" while defusing, decentralizing government till it feels like its not there. I've grown sick of capitalism but it is our reality. I don't think I've gone into just how to end it, but I don't think a violent revolution is necessary (or feasible in the US) the baby steps of raising the minimum wage way way up and/or a "basic income" wage or getting more co-ops and ESOPs, could lead to better income equality but that's not gonna last. Gradualism is good, but its not happening fast enough
And I've obviously not read any Marx. First I finish Herzen's memoir.

Uncover all the injustices and unfairness you want. Nothing will change at the end of the day, because all these ideals are merely that -- ideals. Hypotheticals stacked upon hypotheticals.

Are you a senator? Are you a president? Are you at any position of power whatsoever? No. You're probably an office clerk, you're probably a video game develop, a student, a waiter -- a nobody. Which is why you're posting on some board on 4chan arguing with strangers about how society should be.

Ataraxia is per definition enough my sappho-björkian. Of course you could argue that for it to be achieved you need a level of peace and quiet that can only be provided by organising society in such a way that the world (or at least a good chunk of it) becomes one's garden, since strict isolationism in the orthodox Epicurean sense isn't much of a possibility these days, nor does it seem ultimately beneficial.
