Why do you write?

There is plenty of shitty writings, there are countless mediocre books, there are more masterpieces than you will ever be able to read.

And yet you try to add to that. Why? Is it really necessary?

what?

Writing is fun. I like building characters and settings.

>> No.4436233

If you think every great writer starts out great you are mistaken.

>> No.4436232

Why wouldn't you want to (try to) create something beautiful?

>>4436204
Because I enjoy it, and only autists let things like that keep them from enjoying things.

Contrary to what the morons on /lit/ will tell you, you can improve your writing with hard work. It's not impossible.

>>4436233
excuse me?

>> No.4436304

OP never implied that you have no chance of becoming great (though most if not all of you will not, no matter how hard work you put in).
OP implied that the chance is minuscule. He also implied that even if you do, your general contribution to literature will be relatively insignificant. (Goethe was great, one of the greatest, but seriously, if he never existed, do you think the world would be so much worse?)

Now, if you claim that writing is always fun, than I have no objections.
But usually that is not the case, is it? Usually people get upset and frustrated with their own works, peoples' ambitions destroy them. And writing and ambition are inseparable. You write and you suffer, you become self-important and hate yourselves for that, is it not so? Indeed that is so.

>> No.4436382

I need to get it out of me. When I have an idea for a story, it's painful, it makes me suffer when I don't write it, I can't rest while I don't write it. I'd go crazy if I was not allowed to write.

I love it because it's so painful. When the process is over, I re-read and think "here's a good piece of shit", but at least it's not haunting me anymore.

'Let me just ask myself a question and then answer it'

Anyway OP - I write *because I have the urge to write*.

I think the feeling of transporting inner feelings into something permanent and outside the mind is why people write. They want to make people feel like how their favourite authors have made them feel - or make people feel how they feel.

It isn't really necessary, but it feels important to do it anyway. People write for entirely different reasons to why people who enjoy making things that are necessary make those things.

Well for one I need to get rid of a few niggling mental fuckups, and I figure writing a story around them is the next best thing. Hell, if Kafka could do it then so can I.

it's more important to have a positive occupation that makes life better, the results are only relevant for the market and money chasers

I write because I have to.
I've experienced misery in my life more than some people have, at least in my upbringing. I typed a note once condemning everyone and their emotions as motivated by selfish reasons. I decided to type fiction to avoid finishing that note.

Stick to that answer in the future. Nobody really cares about the shit you've been through unless you make them care via fiction.
