i'm (re)reading it as we speak. the writing is great, as to be expected, but it's a sort of dismal little story isn't it. there isn't really anyone to root for, the MC is a pervert and not a very likeable one. I get a negative feeling reading the book.

Same here. It is very dark but there are some funny tidbits and some of Humbert's musings and coinages are entertaining. The prose is really good, just tasteful enough to not be cheesy.
I have the 50th anniversary paperback with a print of the left half of Dolores' lips on the cover.

It's a good read, but the point of the book, imo, isn't the story, it's more of a cover up of how someone who loathes what he craves feels, going through the discovery(finding lolita), heaven(the mother dies) and hell(she starts hating him, goes away) and then having time to think about what you did.
I really felt connected to hambart, never being able to fully let yourself out or not caring for a moment, always having a plan for when things go wrong. In a way it reminded me of Herman Hesse's Sttepenwolf, that part when he talks about how the common people can just ignore reason and logic for the sake of pleasure, while free-thinkers and non-ignorants are always bound to the burden of criticizing their actions.

What does that even mean? Nabokov was almost literally a 'patrician' coming straight outta pre-Soviet Russia, master of three languages, incredible prose stylist, translator. The work is a pretty fuckin good attempt to carve an enjoyable tale out of an unenjoyable one, littered with references far and wide, with hilarious passages interpolated with the dark ones (if they themselves are not dark).

I don't even care if this is a troll, I'm mad rustled, this thread just shows how shit the board is. 'What do you think of this novel'

Personally I didn't like it that much. The writing is enjoyable but plot-wise it gets incredibly boring once they hit the road. Not my thing I guess. Or maybe I'm a pleb.

I'm reading this now. Got to this passage that didn't quite make sense. Humbert is describing his life with Lolita's mother while Lolita is away at camp:

What does that mean? He left one of Lolita's anklets in the middle of the house to frustrate Charlotte? To what end? That seems like such a useless detail, am I missing something?

I recall his specific request for the cover was that it in no way, shape or form feature any girls. That was for a later edition, though.
