Have user ratings ever meant anything? It's always a hyperbolic, personal excursion rather than an actual objective review.

This. I only signed up because I was bored one day but then I couldn't decide what to read next to I took a chance on a recommendation and it ended up being really good; now I tend to mix and match between their recommendations and just general stuff I want to read and the site has never let me down.

That said, I've never and probably will never use the site for any kind of social stuff because any time I've made the mistake of looking at a review or something, it's been absolutely terrible.
